Overview

This project centers on installing photovoltaic panels with a battery system on boats that belong to the organization “NGO Shidhualai Swanirvar Sangstha” in Bangladesh. These boats serve as floating schools, health centers and meeting places for education and further training. The NGO was founded in 1989 as a self-help group and, in the meantime, operates a fleet of boats in a region that is regularly affected by flooding and barely connected to the road network.

This Partner Project is directly related to two Home Projects in Germany in the form of two passive houses in Baden-Württemberg. The building owners, Sebastian Früh and Guido Schuler, financed the photovoltaic panels to comply with the requirements of passive house certification in connection with a social project in a developing country that is particularly affected by global climate change.
The Passive House Institute expressly supports this kind of compliance. In addition to consequent energy efficiency, the certification of passive houses in the categories “Passive House Plus” and “Passive House Premium” also requires that energy is produced from renewable resources. It is left free to decide, if energy is produced directly on the house, in the region or in another part of the world. These two passive houses are the first to meet these requirements in conjunction with a project focused on collaborative development assistance.
